Physical Therapy

Adventist Health Castle’s physical therapists are valuable members of your healthcare team. They have graduated from an accredited university with either a master’s or a doctor’s degree and have taken their licensure examinations in the state of Hawaii to practice therapy. We hire only the most qualified, dynamic therapists to provide services to our patients.

Adventist Health Castle’s Rehabilitation Services provides high quality physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services at our Ka ¯ne‘ohe facility. Castle Rehabilitation Services treats individuals with medical or health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform activities in their everyday lives. Patients receive one-on-one, evidence-based evaluation and treatment by highly skilled therapists. We examine each client and develop an individualized plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, we work to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

Castle Rehabilitation Services’ therapists collaborate with your physician so that you achieve the highest level of function. Our services stress preventive education, the highest quality care available, and a holistic approach to physical rehabilitation with an emphasis on total well-being. What happens in physical therapy?

Physical therapists provide a method of investigating and solving problems for each patient’s condition. They begin with a thorough evaluation, which may include:

  • Tests of the range of motion of your joints and the strength of your muscles
  • Palpation of soft tissues (manual inspection of skin, joints and other tissue)
  • A neurological assessment to ensure that your nervous system is functioning correctly
  • A pain assessment
  • An evaluation of your daily activities and how they are affected by your injury

After your evaluation is completed, the therapist will look at all the data collected and provide you and your doctor with a recommended plan of care. Your goals for treatment are important to us. As most of the responsibility for recovery lies with you. When we have a plan customized for your unique goals and needs, treatment begins.

Treatment in physical therapy consists of three main types:

  • Procedures: Procedures are active treatments that require your participation or a therapist’s manual skills to promote healing and improved mobility. Examples include exercise programs, joint mobilization and gait training.
  • Modalities: These treatments are passively provided to the patient to work on pain, tightness, swelling and other symptoms. Examples include hot packs, electrical stimulation and ultrasound. These treatments alone are only marginally effective in treating an injury and are most successful used with more active procedures.
  • Education: Education and training of you and your family are among the most significant interventions a physical therapist can offer. Often your body mechanics or posture is contributing to an injury or pain. Working with your physical therapist to correct and change that positioning or habit can eliminate many problems.

Talk to your doctor about physical therapy

Your physical therapist is a skilled member of your healthcare team. They are trained in thorough evaluation and problem solving techniques. Your physical therapist will ask for your assistance in setting goals for your treatment and, on an ongoing basis, ask you to rate your improvement and your progress toward your goals.

Physical therapy services are provided to patients at Adventist Health through acute care, home care services and at our outpatient rehabilitation services in Kāne‘ohe. Ask your doctor if physical therapy would benefit you.
